SENA HW: Summary and Analysis Konwoo Kim
Day: 9/12/15
Scripture: Philippians 3:1-11
Summary:
Paul tells us to rejoice in the Lord. He warns against those “evildoers” and boasting in one’s own achievements. Additionally, he states that whatever he gains is a loss for the sake of Christ, going on to emphasize the fact that he wants to “know” Christ better.
Analysis:
The main idea of this passage is to abstain from thinking too highly of yourself. The fact that Paul has such a great “spiritual resume” only adds to the respectability of his advice (also doesn’t make him a hypocrite). In other words, Paul has plenty of reasons to be arrogant, but chooses not to be. He explains that only Jesus’s accomplishments reach the perfect standard of God, making all of humanity faulty by God’s standards. However, if we truly believe that we can only be saved by Jesus, then his goodness becomes our goodness in God’s eyes. In conclusion, the message that Paul is trying to pass on is that if we truly embrace the fact that Jesus saved us, it will help us to sacrifice our lives for Jesus.
